To kick off this podcast James and Arlene share a little about their upcoming plans to head out for back to back conferences on Monday. With Affiliate Summit Central 2012 and ShareASale ThinkTank 2012 holding their conferences back to back this is a rare opportunity to take in two conferences nearly for the price of one. You’ll hear a little on their preparation plans for both events they are gearing up to leave.

Beyond traveling and conferences James moves right into discussing the ongoing Google updates that have so many webmasters on their toes. It began with Panda, an update that targeted article directories and opened the door for Google Penguin, and update that targeted blogging networks. James discusses what these updates did and why it impacted the sites that felt the hit. Truly understanding these updates is vital in developing a plan to help your site stand the test of Google’s updates.

All though James and Arlene have not experienced any negative impacts from these updates personally they know you must always be careful and never get cocky when it comes to backlinks and take care to keep their backlinking efforts free and clear for risky practices.

To begin James discusses the importance of really evaluating the types of backlinks you have coming into your sites including the anchor text used, quality of the article that anchor text resides on and the quality of the overall site. You’ll hear about keeping your linking efforts natural as well as ways to measure your anchor text choices from one site to the next.

But evaluating and measuring your anchor text is only the beginning. James and Arlene share proven tips they have found to stand the test of these updates through their PAD technique. They talk about the recent popularity growth in guest blogging, the impact it has had on successfully placing articles and tips to help you stand out.

The newest update has been coined the official web SPAM filter and appropriately so. This newest update targets the blogging networks that are spamming Google with lower quality posts that could be linking back to your site in turn causing your pages to drop in the search results. But how do you know if you’re affected?

James begins by thoroughly explaining just what these blogging networks are and why they have been targeted by Google. He shares a look back on the Panda update and the types of content it targeted and leads into the most recent Penguin update and the content now being affected.

Perhaps the most confusing aspect of Penguin is understanding exactly how this update, if it in fact targets blogging networks, can have any negative impact on your site at all. James and Arlene talk about the connection between the two by disclosing the relationship between a “spammy backlink” and your pages. You’ll hear how these networks operate and ways to know if you have been subject to their scams.

Beyond networks and spammy backlinks keeping your ranks in the search engines needs to take on a whole protection type of view. You’ll hear tips how to safeguard your site and ensure you’re not getting mixed up in the wrong neighborhoods.

But what if you’re site has already dropped in the results? Now what can you do? The good news is there is a solution. James shares tips on how to evaluate your listings to determine of you have been affected by the Penguin update and what to do about if you discover you have.
