Podcasting is Dead (to Me)

by Shawn Collins on March 11, 2009

Episode 55 of the Cast of Geeks was an exercise in torture. It was only myself and Lisa Picarille on the call, and I most definitely hit record on the Pamela software, which was confirmed by the pleasant audio notification: “This Call is Being Recorded.”

Only it wasn’t. Pamela lied to me and a quality hour-long conversation is in the vapors – the second time in a month.

So anyway, after I picked up my monitor from the floor and knocked out the dent from punching it, I recorded a recap of the call and touched on the Diggnation guys on Jimmy Fallon, playing with my Kindle 2, a guy getting fired from the Philadelphia Eagles for his Facebook status, David Prager from Revision3 having his house broken in by Michael Myers, and a bunch of other stuff.

This is far more entertaining than any actual successful podcast could have been.

It's definitely easy to listen to a 10 min recap of an hour long show. This is a game changer!

Maybe I should just leave the show to Lisa, Jim and Sam and then I'll recap it like this.

    recapcast.fm?

That would take the fun out of it – we're audio acrobats and we don't have a net.

I liked the prev synopsis when the other CoG recording didnt go through and liked this one too.

Getting like a 10min summary is like Tivo-ing the 60min session.

Please don't quit podcasting though. there's good stuff in this.

Unfortunately, Trisha Lyn and I are going through the same thing with our podcast, but we just started so a recap would be lame. We recorded a great 45 minute second episode only to find out that Callgraph with a mono setting records our voices on top of each other. Live and learn. We'll try again tomorrow.

I can relate, spent 2 weeks setting up a call with a copywriter in Australia to support one of my sites. Finally, on the call Skype + Call Graph hang my system. While later we had a good conversation, I didn't have any audio for my website. (Great choice of Suicidal Tendencies' "Institutionalized", that's exactly how I felt!)

I don't know if it's Vista or not, but Skype seems to work great with Call Graph and Pamela some days for me, and the next day can be a big mess.

Amazes me that you keep putting us through this agony when you have a perfectly good Macbook on your desk that works great with Skype and AudioHijackPro. Just sayin'

Exactly, I have a good Mac, but a GREAT PC.

I've been thinking of going Mac, with underlying BSD Unix, I'd get the best of both worlds, but that one button mouse confuses me. Even DEC Vt1200's had three-buttons. Is Mac audio / video production that much better?

Macs have a right click just like a PC.

I decided a long time ago to quit counting on outside services for anything that could be done in-house. The result is seven servers and a phone system. Now I can only blame myself…
