Welcome to the Performance Marketing Association Industry Report, a podcast dedicated to the most pressing issues impacting advertisers, publishers, networks and agencies.

Tim Storm joined host Lisa Picarille to talk about the Affiliate Nexus Tax in Illinois.

Tim is the founder and CEO of FatWallet.com, an online coupon, rewards and deal community started in 1999. It is now one of the top 1000 website worldwide. In 2006 Tim received the Affiliate Summit Pinnacle Award for Affiliate Marketing Legend. He was also one of four finalists for Entrepreneur of 2010 and that same year FatWallet was named one of the 50 Best Small and Medium Workplaces by Entrepreneur Magazine. In addition he’s won numerous awards from LinkShare and Commission Junction.

We began talking about Tim’s role in fighting the Affiliate Nexus Tax bill in Illinois. We then discussed why he is moving FatWallet to the neighboring state of Wisconsin; what is means to his business; how merchant’s are reacting to the signing of the bill; the impact on FatWallet’s employees; what affiliates in other states can do to stop these laws; the role that Big Box retailers played in influencing Illinois politicians; and more.

Great interview and some very good insight from Tim on this issue. Man, Illinois really railroaded affiliates!!!

Thanks for the great podcast. I’m currently working on an affiliate program launch and am experiencing first hand the negative impact of this tax. Because of States we need to avoid, the revenue projections for the launch are reduced, making it harder to cost justify the program. Uncertainty in other states just adds to the problem.

Thank you to Tim Storm and Lisa. I’m now a Fat Wallet fan and have referenced the company’s move in several conversations on how to fight the nexus tax and the implications of passing legislation that is bad for business.
