GeekCast 23: Can’t We All Just Get Along?

by Shawn Collins on June 17, 2008

GeekCast was in full gear for episode 23 featuring the regular cast of Lisa Picarille, Jim Kukral, Shawn Collins and Sam Harrelson.

The show kicked off with discussion around the ABestWeb forum thread on the Performance Marketing Alliance initiative and whether or not affiliate marketing as an industry is being helped or hindered by the organization and whether or not some of the comments there were helpful to the industry as well. This theme comes around at the end of the show. So, make sure to listen to the whole thing for the proper context.

Talk then moved on to Technorati’s new failnetwork. The participants were not too keen on Technorati’s chances at success. Firefox 3 was released earlier today, so the gang gets Shawn Collins to move off of Internet Explorer 4.0 in an attempt to bring him in line with the 21st century.

The show then takes a turn towards more controversy with a heated debate about the nature of music production and distribution and whether or not the “metered internet” is needed to slow the tide of bandwidth hogs and how the music business will continue to wilt if it does not start providing access to music in ways that are in line with consumer demand (namely cheap downloading with no DRM).

Of course, Jim brings up his utopian vision for a YouTube Business and tries to kick that dead horse a few more times before the conversation gets back on track and Lisa leads a very thought provoking segment on how and why the AP is locking down content and what that means to the rest of us.

Interestingly enough, . The gang discusses the changing nature of news and information transferring and asks some very deep questions about what Qik and smarter mobiles mean for the future of “news” and “analysis.”

Spore’s creature creator was also released today, so Sam explained how it will become the biggest game of all time.

Jim, Shawn and Sam throw out their favorite Wordpress plugins and discuss the topic of Sitemaps and their effectiveness for SEO purposes.

The show ends on a serious note coming back full circle to cover more of the ABW and PMA dust up and what it means for the future of affiliate marketing.

And of course there is talk of mandles and boobs after Lisa leaves.

If you stick around that far, there are two very special prizes that you can win, so listen for those. However, you had to have heard the middle of the show to get the full details, so don’t skip ahead :)

The show runs a nut filled 84 minutes and 13 seconds.

I don't think I've ever seen dozens of words in one hyperlink like that -impressively bothersome to my eyes.

Sam: “I don't like it when people try to tell other people how to run their businesses?” (during the discussion about an industry group)

Except when it comes to cable companies and the music business? :-b

Dude the movie is all about ARGs and fan incubation. :P

Great Podcast…I would stick to “issues” and avoid “people” who are trying to get attention. It is tempting but why bother?

I'm not telling the cable companies or music industry how to run their businesses. The market is doing that, Mr. Corporate Socialist.

Nice chat…I think the industry association we absolutely need should be like a lobbying group that protects the interests and participants in affiliate marketing, the merchants and affiliate marketers, from things like regulations and taxes imposed from the outside. To include everyone influential in all of performance-based marketing would be a room of hundreds. The meeting seemed like more of a local chapter meeting in reality but nonetheless very needed that we have some organization or organizations to discuss and deal with issues relating to affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is now a world-wide phenomenon much bigger than any single forum or conference. Nobody owns, controls or represents the entire industry or even webmasters in general. In fact there are numerous excellent webmaster/seo/affiliate forums i.e. Digital Point, 5staraffiliates, Sitepoint, Affiliates4u and other great conferences like Adtech and Webmasterworld that heavily represent the industry. There are many influential people in affiliate marketing that would inevitably be “left out” of any small affiliate organization…I think most would be pleased an organization existed and support it. All in all, this was a great first step toward a formal organization and should be looked at only as that…it drew a lot of attention to the issue and hopefully can result in a great organization, maybe even multiple organizations if that’s what needs to happen…I would support it in any way possible.

Thieves are not “the market.”

That's not what McCain said when he took Charles Keating's money.

I think you're confused – that was Obama taking Rezko's money.

Now you have something wrong with people taking money if they've done
nothing wrong? You really have become a socialist. Rush would be very
disappointed in you.

Rezko was found guilty on sixteen counts of corruption. Of course his dealings with Obama were on the up and up.

Let's save it for RedHatBlueHat.

Damn… listened way late this evening and that sweet, sweet prize is probably gone. Suck!

The real way to enter should have been to say what Sam said AFTER the out-tro song lol
