GeekCast 21: The Art of the CPA Pitch

by Shawn Collins on June 4, 2008

Lisa Picarille, Jim Kukral, Shawn Collins and Sam Harrelson are back together for episode 21 of the weekly GeekCast.

The first few minutes of the show describes innovative ways to recruit affiliates outside of the traditional emails and cold calls (which are becoming increasingly ineffective). The conversation steers into the direction of why companies like Apple and Microsoft fight over the “cool” factor in their marketing campaigns.

Of course Twitter and its recent downtime comes into the conversation as the gang recounts what happened to cause the downtime and what Twitter users are doing to get their micro-blogging fix these days.

Jim then launches into a pitch for ZobZee (which he calls the “Twitter-Killer” for obvious reasons) which is followed by a somewhat heated debate between Sam and Jim over what constitutes fooling people and satire.

Sam then gets a chance to pitch his new role with Motive Interactive and how Motive is seeking to differentiate itself from other CPA and affiliate networks in the space.

The show starts to wrap up with a great debate on whether YouTube engineered campaigns (like the Wii Fit Girl or LonelyGirl15) are effective or just end up alienating viewers and participants with some discussion of hot new video games and console systems.

At the end there is talk of metrics like Alexa and Compete, more political talk and the show ends where it began with how to pitch super affiliates from the network perspective.

The show runs a manageable 80 or so minutes and ranks up there with the best of the shows that the GeekCast team has put together.
