The Performance Marketing Association is launching a series of podcast dedicated to the most pressing issues impacting advertisers, publishers, networks and agencies. This is our first one and we thought it was important to jump start a dialog about the nagging problem of fraud.
Lisa Picarille moderated this podcast, where guests Will Martin-Gill and Scott Jangro talked about fraud in the affiliate marketing space.
Will Martin-Gill is the director of Internet marketing for eBay, where he leads business development for eBay’s affiliate channel. Previously, Will was responsible for key advertising and search engine marketing initiatives for eBay, and before that he was senior manager of corporate strategy. His scope of responsibility included strategy development, mergers and acquisitions and various projects across Marketplaces, PayPal and Skype, including Internet marketing strategy. Before joining eBay, Will was a manager with Boston Consulting Group, where he was on the startup team that created and launched Orbitz.com.
We were also joined by Scott Jangro, president and co-founder of MechMedia. MechMedia was founded in 2004 and is a firm specializing in performance and search engine marketing. The company focuses primarily on niche, retail and community websites. Prior to MechMedia, Scott served as a Director of Product Management at Be Free, Inc. and later Commission Junction. Scott is a very active and vocal member of the affiliate community by speaking at industry events, sitting on advisory boards, his blogging AffBook.com, Jangro.com and Revenews.com, and promotion of affiliate marketing bloggers on BUMPzee.com.
We started off the discussion by defining fraud. The discussion also focused on the most common types of fraud including cookie stuffing and fake leads; steps being taken to combat fraud; how the industry can help in the fight; why educating advertisers and publishers is crucial; what the networks can do; the role of law enforcement in fraud; and more.
