Welcome to another episode of the Performance Marketing Association’s Industry report, a podcast dedicated to the most pressing issues impacting advertisers, publishers, networks and agencies.

Lisa Picarille was the moderator and the topic was the advertising tax – specifically what happened recently in Colorado. Lisa was joined by Colorado affiliates Marc Braunstein and Jeannine Crooks.

Marc is the CEO and Co-Founder (along with his wife Claudia) of Belcaro Group, Inc., a 23 year old direct response company that has evolved from the largest paper based catalog of catalogs into one of the largest coupon site on the Web.

Jeannine has been involved in online and affiliate marketing since 1999, and is currently the Director of Affiliate Marketing for OneBigPlanet.com. She is also a frequent speaker on affiliate marketing for organizations such as the Denver Internet Mastermind Group and the DaVinci Institute.

Jeannine and Marc discussed how they got involved in the grassroots fight against the advertising tax; when they became aware of it in their home state and why it was so important to join the fight against it. Marc also gave a behind the scenes glimpse of how the affiliates worked with key lawmakers to amend the language of the bill to exclude affiliates and why he agreed to publicly endorse the bill – despite knowing that affiliates outside the hearing room would likely not understand his position. Jeannine talked about lessons learned from being involved in the grassroots efforts and what affiliate in other states can take away from this in their respective battles.
