Welcome to episode 21 of The Spew, a podcast about women in online marketing, by women in online marketing.

For this episode Lisa Picarille (@lisap) moderated and was joined by:

Karen Garcia (@karengarcia), co-founder of GTO Management and Ultimate Foodie

Karen White (@KarenWhite_LV), founder and CEO of Squirtgun Media

And Lisa Riolo (@LisaRiolo), co founder of Impact Radius

We (meaning me, Lisa Picarille) had some Skype issues on this one. I thought my dear friend Pamela was recording the entire show, but I guess Pamela didn’t kick in until all four of the ladies were on the call. That means about 8 minutes at the beginning of the show are missing. I think we spent most of that time chatting about marketing and holidays.

The podcast starts in the middle of Lisa Riolo talking about ways for affiliates and merchants to differentiate themselves by offering gift wrapping as a service. She was disappointed to have order so many gifts to be shipped to far- flung family and friends that many of them couldn’t be gift wrapped. She felt like she was imposing on her brother to wrap the gifts intended for his kids from their Auntie Lisa in California.

Anyway, after that we got into the validity of awards and industry honors. Of course, we offered a huge round of applause and congrats to Karen Garcia, who had recently won a ShareASale Performance Award – the Pay It Forward award. She was also nominated for an Affiliate Summit Pinnacle Award for Most Vocal Industry Advocate – quite a week for the very-deserving Mrs. Garcia.

And Lisa Riolo (@LisaRiolo), Internet Marketing Consultant.

This week, we discussed things to have with you on the road and how to be productive while mobile and traveling.

Lisa Picarille is as prepared as they come and had a comprehensive list of items she brings with her on trips and how for her it’s all about the bag, even though the perfect bag is elusive.

Lisa Riolo told us all about her new gadget Mi-Fi that allows her to create her own hot-spot from anywhere and how convenient she finds it to be, even at home.

Karen White mentioned that she’s kind of anti-mobile in exchange for a better Quality of Life and her observation that the more gadgets someone has, the harder it seems to be to reach them.

We also discussed netbooks and their convenience for business travel and how Karen Garcia uses them for personal writing while she’s undisturbed and unreachable on long flights.

We also ran through a rather lengthy list of applications that we find to help with day to day and on the road productivity including Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Voice, 37Signals Basecamp, Drop.io, ZoHo, Hootsuite, Skype and GoToMeeting as well as password management tips and tricks.

Finally, we closed out this week’s podcast with a discussion of comfort items we bring on the road with us.

Lisa Picarille (@lisap), an online content strategist, was the moderator for this week’s show.

Panelists this week include:

Karen Garcia (@karengarcia), co-founder of GTO Management and Ultimate Foodie.

And Karen White (@KarenWhite_LV), a Marketing Strategist focusing on Performance marketing initiatives.

This time around we talked about sponsorships, holiday planning, and women we admire. However, it looks like our pal Pamela cut off the final 8 minutes of the show where we talked about women we admire. Oh well, I guess we’ll try that topic again on another show.

Here’s what made it on to the recording:

Healthy Choice is sponsoring a House Party for Kim Rowley’s birthday. HouseParty.com offers many choices for people to sign up and have a party. They provide plates and decorations, as well as coupons for food. Happy Birthday Kim enjoy the celebration.

We discussed other sponsorship options for both merchants and online marketers including Social Spark, Pay per Post, and Sponsored Tweets. In addition, we mentioned that respected bloggers like Missy Ward and Jim Kukral are on the board of Ted Murphy’s company Izea, which focuses on this area.

Next we chatted about holiday planning. Promotions for the major holidays are starting earlier each year and Halloween has become one of the largest consumer spending holidays – growing year-over-year. At the time of the show there were 44 days until Halloween, 71 days until Thanksgiving and 100 days until Christmas.

Karen Garcia noted that if you an online marketer and don’t have your Halloween promotions in order right now, you may be left in the dust. Still, you need to flexible and be on top of trends and pop culture to help predict what costumes may be popular. GTO has a holiday countdown calendar up on their site. Joel Garcia coded it and posted it less than 30 minutes after we recorded the show. Wow.

This time around we are talking about the distractions of working at home and benefits and challenges of employing family and friends.

Lisa Picarille (@lisap), an online content strategist, moderated this week’s shows. Lisa blogs at lisapicarille.com

Panelists this week include:

Karen Garcia (@karengarcia), co-founder of GTO Management and Ultimate Foodie.

Kim Rowley (@kimarketing), Affiliate Marketer, blogger and President of Shoeaholics Anonymous

Connie Berg (@connieberg), Head Bird in Charge of FlamingoWorld.com, was slated to join us, but she was waiting for Charter to fix her repeated problems with her online connection, cable and phone.

We pressed on without Connie and talked about kids being a huge distraction when working from home. Both Kim and Karen’s children were off to school this week and lots of work was getting done.

Husbands that are working from home can also be a distraction and the ladies agreed that even the smallest interruption can make it hard to get back on track.

Talk then turned to hiring family and friends. Should there be a contact in place? What are the challenges of managing a family member? And how do you deal with the working relationship if it goes sour?

Kim employs her aunt as a contractor and that is going well. However, Kim’s oldest son worked for her for a while and that didn’t turn out so well.

Karen is partners with her husband Joel and Wade Tonkin in OPM firm GTO Management. They also employ Karen’s little sister (a college student) and Joel’s best friend. Karen likes the idea of hiring friends and family rather than outsourcing to someone she doesn’t know. Lisa thinks it’s a bad idea and is ripe for too many problems that spill into your personal life.

We also noted that Connie used to employ her step son. Her ex-husband still works for her. Tricia Meyer of Sunshine Rewards has her mom working for her and it’s an interesting twist on the typical mother/daughter dynamic.

This time around we are talking about conferences – how to get the most for your money, which ones to attend, the etiquette of conferences and how to take action after the event is over.

I’m Lisa Picarille (@lisap), an online content strategist and your moderator for this week’s show.

Our panelists this week include:

Karen Garcia (@karengarcia), co-founder of GTO Management and Ultimate Foodie.

Karen White (@KarenWhite_LV), a Marketing Strategist focusing on Performance marketing initiatives

And Kim Rowley (@kimarketing), Affiliate Marketer, Mommy Blogger and President of Shoeaholics Anonymous

We talked about having specific goals for a conference – people to meet, sessions to attend and business to close.

How people follow up with emails, tweets, hand-written notes (a big shout out to search affiliate Eric Nagel).

Make sure to post your event photos on Facebook and Flickr and post a blog recap after the conference.

We also chatted about how we all decide which conferences to attend and the ROI of hosting a party or event during the conference.

And finally – show etiquette. Bathing is a must – enough said. Bringing enough business cards is vital. And dressing appropriately for the type of venue and event is key. The ladies also agree that seeing the men in our industry dressed up in a suite and tie makes a very good impression.

Enjoy!

This week it’s a new format with just the gals chatting, mostly, about Work – Life Balance.

The crossing of the line, between work and life, goes both directions. Sometimes work consumes us. Sometimes we’re doing laundry while listening to a work-related conference call. Is this such a bad thing? Does the line between work and life even need to exist? Maybe we should stop trying so hard to keep the one part of our life so separate from the other?

Lisa Riolo (@lisariolo) of LisaRiolo.com moderated this week’s panelists:

We asked a number of great questions this week–with interesting and, sometimes, surprising answers, including:

As your own boss, on the bad days, how do you get yourself back on track?

Is it best work at home when you work for yourself? Is working for yourself a great for everyone?

If you do work out of the home, what can you do to manage and control interruptions?

How to get our virtual “work” friends, that may think of us as more fun than professional, to take us seriously?

Listen in to Episode 12 and you’ll also discover:

How to tell whether or not Lisa P is at work…

What bed making routines reveal about your work-from-home productivity…
