Are Pokens Too Feminine?

by Shawn Collins on August 31, 2009

This week on the Affiliate Thing podcast, Shawn Collins and Lisa Picarille talked about the gender controversies surrounding both the new GeekCast.fm logo and Pokens.

Also discussed was the Google Affiliate Network and Google AdSense account linking setup, questions and answers on eBay quality link pricing, Affiliate Summit publishing books, and how Shawn and Lisa will be singing about Dennis Yu, since he won the Affiliate Marketers Give Back charity auction.

New logo for GeekCast.fm

Plus, there is talk of Pizza Hut and unadvertising, what’s in store at CJU, and the truth behind the “Your Business Card is Crap” guy.

Hi, just listened to the podcast, and wanted to provide some information on one of the open-ended points about the poken. If you happen to lose your poken, you can log in to your doyoupoken.com account and mark the poken as lost. If someone picks it up, and plugs it into their computer's USB, none of your contact card information, or any of your colleagues will be revealed.
There's more information here: http://www.doyoupoken.com/PokenWeb/corporate/faq….
I hope that helps! Thank you for the very informative coverage. I'd love to answer any additional questions.

Thanks a lot Vanessa. I'm still a newb on the Poken action. :)

You guys make me sound like I am on a hating binge lately :) The idea of the Poken is good but I just don't care for the design at all, too childish for my taste.

Logos… Pokens… I've got to walk on eggshells around you these days.

Forget it if the Falcons lose!

I will chime in with the New Yorkers, also not a fan of the new logo.

Lisa I have a geisha too! Ninjas are not girly so I think you guys are all set. I wish I had given Shawn my business card. Good idea on personalizing the poken with Affiliate Summit stickers. :)

Giving some information away for free is good exposure and it shows your expertise to others.

I am looking forward to hearing you guys sing. Shawn make it as epic as the back alleys of Las Vegas!

Okay I am going to go get a slice of great NY pizza right down stairs on St Marks for $1.

We're taking this above and beyond the famed Vegas performance. Our song will appeal to everybody from the streets to the suites.

I have a panda…I have to admit…i feel like a little harijuku girl with this thing attached to my bag. That said, they are noticeable and functional…..maybe someday I can just swap it out for a logoed one with swarovski diamonds or a big $ sign.

Shawn Collins September 1, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Blinging out your Panda? Maybe not. :)

This was one of my first thoughts when I first saw the Poken – could you see the CEO of a Fortune 500 company whip out one of these characters at a business meeting? Probably not. This being said, despite the cute designs (and they are seriously cute!) I got one because the concept just works! Why carry paper when you can carry a digital info exchange device? I would love to see a plain non-character device for those that prefer to keep their business identity on the more serious side. Evolution cometh, and I bet within a year we'll see something like this become available, but I got the Ninja, because I ride one, lol.

The logo looks like a customer service tech support guy. There should be a speech bubble saying "Have you rebooted? Is it plugged in?" You should hold a contest to name him.

Shawn Collins September 2, 2009 at 3:39 am

Him? How do you know it's not a girl geek with short hair?

Michael Buechele September 2, 2009 at 1:34 pm

Then I guess the name is “Pat”
