In this edition of the Affiliate Buzz audio newsletter James Martell, successful publisher, speaker and author talks with wife and cohost Arlene Martell as they recap this year’s Affiliate Summit West 2012 in Las Vegas.
Having attended these conferences for many years James and Arlene are a top resource in understanding what to expect, how to get the most out of your attendance and making sure it’s worth your time and effort. Again this year they brought home valuable nuggets to share and tips on getting ready for next year!
With each conference having their own layout and varying twists they share that there’s really no better way to kick off a conference than with the meat market. A meat market is literally a line of merchants set up in a “flea market” style with all the perks of their company on display. Each table has a representative ready to answer your questions, show you the inside of their company and of course offer to link up online.
If there is one thing ShareASale is known for at these events it’s their get acquainted kick off party. This year the Sunday night part was hosted 50 feet above the strip with a crystal clear dance floor that had unsurpassed views and full of excitement. Every year the kick off parties take affiliates and merchants by surprise and can easily be what you look forward to.
This year it wasn’t only the ShareASale party that deserved attention. Buy.at hosted their own party on Monday night where everyone had a chance to meet the team get acquainted with their company. With the perfect networking ambiance James shares this was one party everyone would want to attend.
Organizing Your Work Load for Efficiency
But we don’t attend Summit just for the parties, all though they are certainly worth attending. Rather we go to learn about everything new in the affiliate industry, meet potential merchants and improve your own business. James and Arlene discuss some of the sessions that were held this year and give a closer look at what the meat market has to offer.
As James discusses the day to day schedule of sessions and topics that were covered he and Arlene touch on the common complaint of information overload. With so much valuable information being laid on the table many attendees find themselves swallowed up by what is presented to them. The good news is information overload CAN be avoided.
Arlene shares practical tips for both the first time attendee and those who have been to events in the past. By scheduling your days and sessions intentionally you can focus your efforts in areas that will benefit your business above all else. She even shares how to manage the emotional crash that frequently follows your return home.

Yes, this was the first time we surpassed 5,000 people with 5,087.
Hey Shawn a BIG congrats. Surpassing the 5,000 mark is a big deal. Way to go!
Thanks James – very excited about it. Fun to listen to your show.
By the way, good timing on walking past the Meet Market in Las Vegas – I’ve used the picture I was taking at that moment a few times in posts: http://www.flickr.com/photos/affiliate/6665494639/
Cool. I remember you snapping the photo.

Thanks for the nice comments James on my session, it was destiny that I was your opener.
On June 23rd 2004 when we met at the Shareasale party I had never heard of you. That night when I got home I bought your Affiliate manual. At the time it was a nice chunk of change but I thought to myself why not and pulled the trigger.
Today I wonder how much money that initial chuck of change has made me.
That was fun to hear that you guys met at Brian’s party before the cruise. I was still stuffing attendee bags back at my house that night and didn’t make it in the city until the next morning.
